Brisbane is the head-office and training end of most Queensland mining operations rather than the site end, so the transport we run for mining clients here looks different from a mine-gate shuttle. It is crews collected from suburban pick-up points and delivered to the domestic terminal for the morning FIFO charter flights; contractors moved between a Brisbane hotel and a training facility for induction week; head-office staff bussed to a site visit in the Surat Basin; and, during shutdowns, surge crews that need to be somewhere five hours away by a fixed gate time.
FIFO airport transfers
The early FIFO flights out of Brisbane's domestic terminal board between 4.30am and 6.30am, which means suburban pick-ups from around 3am and a run into the terminal that has to be reliable rather than fast. We run these as scheduled services on the roster cycle — the same pick-up points, the same order, the same driver where possible — and the roster is loaded once with the swing dates so changes are handled by exception. Return runs meet the evening flights and drop in reverse order. Gateway and Airport Link tolls are part of the run and are itemised.
Crews with gear are the sizing issue. A 21-seater with a trailer or a 30-seat coach with under-floor luggage handles a crew of 18 with bags and eskies; a standard minibus does not. Tell us the crew size and whether they are travelling with site kit and we size the vehicle for the luggage, not just the seats.
Training, induction and head-office movements
Induction and training weeks bring crews into Brisbane who do not know the city and are staying in serviced apartments in the CBD, Fortitude Valley or near the airport. A daily shuttle between the accommodation and the training provider — whether that is a registered training organisation in Eagle Farm or a client facility in the western corridor — keeps the cohort together and on time, and is quoted per week. Head-office site visits to the Surat Basin around Chinchilla and Miles, the Bowen Basin via Moranbah, or the Darling Downs are quoted as a single day or multi-day charter with driver changeovers and overnight positioning shown as their own lines, because the fatigue rules for a five-hour outbound leg followed by a site tour and a return do not allow one driver to do it in a day.
Shutdown and surge transport
Shutdowns compress months of work into a few weeks and the transport has to scale with it: extra crews landing on the same flights, contractors arriving by road, and everyone needing to be at a gate on time. We plan surge transport backwards from the gate time with a buffer for the last leg, hold spare capacity for the peak days, and supply a single point of contact who can move vehicles as flights slip. Documentation — driver accreditation, vehicle inspection and insurance certificates — is provided up front so the vehicles are cleared for site access before the shutdown starts.
The guide to FIFO crew transport planning covers roster loading and pick-up point design; driver fatigue rules explains why long site runs are planned the way they are.
Compliance and documentation
Mining clients ask for more paperwork than any other sector and we treat that as part of the job. Every driver holds the Queensland driver authorisation required for charter work, vehicles carry current inspection certificates, and public-liability and passenger insurance certificates are supplied with the quote. Site-specific inductions for drivers are arranged where the client requires them. Journey management plans can be provided for long-distance runs in the format the client's safety system uses.
Mining Transport in Brisbane: questions
What time can you pick up for the early FIFO flights?
Any time. Pick-ups from 2.30am are normal for the first charter flights out of Brisbane, and the driver roster is built around the flight schedule rather than office hours. Early-start loading is shown as a line on the quote.
Can you handle roster changes and swing swaps?
Yes. The roster is loaded once and changes are handled by exception through a single contact. Same-day changes are managed where vehicle capacity allows, and we tell you immediately if it does not.
Do you run to the Bowen or Surat Basin from Brisbane?
Yes, as day or multi-day charters. Long site runs are planned under the national fatigue rules, which usually means a driver changeover or an overnight stop is part of the quote for anything beyond about five hours each way.
Can you supply driver and vehicle documentation for site access?
Yes. Driver authorisations, vehicle inspection certificates and insurance certificates are supplied with the quote, and site inductions for drivers are arranged where your site requires them.
